Stupid stupid memo.

Entrapment: lets talk about it. That is, if you aren't entrapment'd out yet.

Legal writing is the most important class, I know. I still think it's a nuisance. It's memo time and I will do anything to avoid it so I blog.

My legal writing professor has given me a bit of a complex. My first "practice memo" had so many pencil markings I feared I might get lead poisoning. I guess it turned out about as well as I expected my first memo turn out. She assured me that everyone had the same amount of pencil markings. The thing is, lawyers lie so I don't know if I should believe her. I fear now i'm bound to fuck this next one up.

I'm also very scared that it is worth 40% of my grade. That is a high percentage right there and all I can keep thinking about are all of those pencil markings.

I will soon have my very first law school grade, and at 40%, it will be hard to overcome and will stick around for a while. What if I fuck up? Anytime I see someone that I know isn't a 1L, I envy them for no longer being in legal writing.

To anonymous high ranking official at BLS, I apologize in advance for dragging your name through the mud by choosing you as my alias name for the memo. Perhaps if I had chosen my professors name, she would subconsciously grade me higher.

If I could find a way to make the blog spam stop, I would.

I know there are two memo topics floating around; entrapment and venue. Good luck with it.

i have two tips for your memo...

(1) never use the passive voice or any form of the verb to be - your teacher has probably told you this, and you probably think that you can still use it maybe once or twice to avoid awkwardness. DON'T!!! if you think hard enough, you will figure out a way to write every sentence in the active voice. Example: John Doe was arrested. ----> The police arrested John Doe.

(2) use IRAC!!! if you don't know what that is, it stands for (I)ssue (R)ule (A)nalysis (C)onclusion. every paragraph of your discussion section should be written in IRAC form. the first sentence of the paragraph states the issue, the second, the rule. then, you analyze the rule with the facts, and finally, conclude.

i realize that these tips may sound very remedial and stupid, but i promise you that they are a major part of good legal writing. while you may be able to write a great memo without using these two tips, your teacher will probably not agree. what makes legal writing so difficult, is that it is not how you are used to writing. if you are a good writer in general, you may not be a good legal writer. there is a format that people like, and this is the key to that format.

i hope this is helpful, and good luck.

by the way, this facebook fella really has no clue if he thinks that heading up a student organization is going to help facilitate a transfer to a prestigious law school! if he doesn't get the grades, he's going nowhere...

Thank you 3:43. I know I tend to use too many pronouns and the passive voice. The nitpickyness of it all is the most annoying part.

The facebook dude must think this is high school where joining organizations looks good or important.

As far as actually stopping blog spam, the only real method is to turn on word verification, which is very irritating for non-spammers, but makes it much much more difficult for spammers to post to your blog.

Second to that, when (as an admin for your own blog) you see nasty spam, you can delete it by clicking the garbage can icon. Then it will take you to a second page where you can check a box that says: "Remove this comment forever? (Cannot be undone)" You do that. This way people don't see that you ever got spammed in the first place.

As far as facebook dude goes, it's really a pretty classless move to disrespect your school on the internet. For all my complaints about how things are run or how they could be better, at least I would not ever say that I'm not damn lucky to be here in the first place.

I actually did turn on word verification. I then realized it would be annoying for the few real people that actually leave comments. Sorry everyone for the inconvenience, but I gotta do something aboutthe spam.

I clicked the trash can icon but it was still showing that I had 10+ comments. Maybe I did something wrong? I'll check it out.

I know I walk a fuzzy line by talking about the school on my blog too. However this school was actually one of my top choices so i'm grateful to be here. I think some bitching is natural especially when others can relate. The facebook dude pretty much spoke down to everyone that goes here though.
